Germany visa questions answered.

Is it actually true that German public universities are tuition-free? +

For the most part, yes — public universities in 15 of 16 German states charge international students no tuition, just a semester contribution of roughly €150–350 (which usually includes a transport pass). The exception is Baden-Württemberg, which charges non-EU students €1,500/semester, and TU Munich, which has introduced its own non-EU tuition fee. Private universities charge tuition everywhere.

How much money do I need to show for a Germany student visa? +

Most applicants open a blocked account (Sperrkonto) showing €11,904 for the year, released to you in monthly instalments of about €992 once you arrive. This sits alongside the €75 national visa fee, your APS certificate, and proof of health insurance.

What is the APS certificate and do I need one? +

The Academic Evaluation Centre (APS) certificate is a mandatory document verification step for Indian students applying for a German student visa, in place since October 2022. We handle the application and document set as part of your file — budget roughly 4–8 weeks for processing.

Can I work while studying in Germany? +

Yes. International students can work up to 140 full days or 280 half days a year (roughly 20 hours a week in term time) without a separate work permit. Working beyond that limit needs approval from the Agentur für Arbeit and the immigration office.

What's the difference between the student visa and a Schengen visitor visa? +

The National (D) visa is for study lasting longer than 90 days and requires an APS certificate, blocked account, and university admission. A Schengen visitor visa (Type C) covers tourism, family visits, or business trips up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and doesn't need any of the study-specific documents.

How long does a Germany visitor visa take to process? +

Standard Schengen visitor visa processing through a German mission typically takes around 15 working days from your appointment, though this can extend during peak travel seasons. We recommend applying at least a month before your planned travel date.
